What is Dr. Evans’ Approach to BOTOX® Cosmetic/Fillers?
Injectables such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or fillers give us a safe, nonsurgical way to give a more youthful appearance to the face. The aging process occurs in a number of different way including loss of volume, skin damage and laxity and dropping of structures over time. The overall result is an aged look that is the combination of many small changes. Injectables correct those many small changes to give an overall younger look. In the experience of board-certified plastic surgeon Robin Evans, MD, injectables are most effective when used in combination with a personalized skin care regime and sometimes corrective surgery. Knowing the benefits and limitations of each technique is critical to achieving the best overall result.
About BOTOX® Cosmetic
BOTOX®, also known as botulinum toxin type A, is a substance that is purified from bacteria. There are two brands of botulinum toxin type A on the market, one called BOTOX® Cosmetic and one called Dysport®. Botulinum toxin type A blocks nerve signals to specific muscles which make them weak so it can’t contract.
How Does BOTOX® Cosmetic get Rid of Wrinkles?
You have a number of small muscles in your face that are responsible for facial expression. Those muscles insert into your skin and can cause the skin to fold in on itself, therefore creating a wrinkle over time. BOTOX® Cosmetic weakens the muscle that causes wrinkles and removes them. It also helps teach you how not to cause more wrinkles!
What Kind of Wrinkles can Botulinum Toxin Remove?
Botulinum toxin can smooth out Crow’s feet (beside your eyes), forehead furrows, frown lines and skin bands on the neck.
Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Hurt?
We understand that people may be apprehensive about the needles. We use special, non-sting solution and use of the smallest needles available to reduce the pain to virtually nothing.
How Long Will it Take for BOTOX® Cosmetic to Work and How Long Will it Last?
Typically people notice results in as little as a few days but it really takes a full week to see the full effect. It usually lasts 3-4 months, depending on how active is the area that we inject. More active muscles tend to require injections more frequently.
What can I Expect in Terms of Recovery?
Occasionally people have a little swelling or small bruise in the area of the injection. This typically resolves in a few days. We ask that you do not massage the area for 24 hours because it can move the BOTOX® Cosmetic solution to a different area which can result in an unwanted effect.
Dermal fillers, or “fillers,” are an injectable substance that replaces lost volume. They are a powerful way to reduce facial wrinkles and restore youthful fullness to the face. As we age, connective tissue and skin stretches which causes the fat pads in our face decrease in volume and drop in position. Fillers restore that volume to give a more youthful appearance.
What are Fillers Made Of?
There are a number of different types of fillers available for use. Dr. Evans typically uses a temporary filler based on hyaluronic acid. This is a naturally occurring substance in the body and has an excellent safety profile.
What are the Risks of Injectable Fillers?
Hyaluronic acid based fillers are very safe. Risks include mild swelling or bruising and temporary numbness or redness. We minimize these risks by using a “cannula” technique with our injections. Rare complications can include lumps, damage to the skin, over/under correction, or asymmetry. We will review any specific risks and answer your questions before your procedure.
Where are Fillers Typically Injected?
Fillers can be used to restore volume to plump thin lips, lift the cheeks, and soften wrinkles or scars. Usually volume is added in many small areas to give an overall improvement.
